Shri Walkeshwar Temple: A Sacred Shiva Temple in Mumbai

Shri Walkeshwar Temple, also known as the Baan Ganga Temple, is a revered Shiva temple in the Walkeshwar area of South Mumbai. Situated near Malabar Hill, it stands at the highest point of the city, close to the historic Banganga Tank.

Historical and Mythological Significance

  • Legend of Lord Rama: According to legend, Lord Rama paused here while pursuing Ravana. Rama created a Shiva Linga from sand, called Valuka Iswar, after growing tired of waiting for his brother Lakshman to bring an idol.
  • Creation of Banganga: When thirsty, Rama shot an arrow to bring the Ganges to this spot. The Banganga Tank, fed by an underground spring, was thus created.

Construction and Reconstruction

  • Original Construction: The temple and Banganga Tank were built in 1127 AD by Lakshman Prabhu, a minister in the court of the Silhara dynasty.
  • Destruction and Rebuilding: The Portuguese destroyed the temple in the 16th century. It was rebuilt in 1715 by Rama Kamat, a Mumbai businessman and philanthropist.
  • Modern Developments: The main temple has been substantially reconstructed. Many smaller temples have since emerged around Banganga Tank. By 1860, 10 to 20 temples and 50 dharamshalas had been established in the vicinity.

Temple Trust and Management

  • The temple and much of the surrounding property belong to the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin Temple Trust.
  • Branches of Shri Kavle Math and Shri Kashi Math are located on the northern and western banks of the tank.

Worship and Festivals

  • Worship Schedule: The temple is busy during the full moon and Amavasya (new moon). It was once favored by Malabar pirates in the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • Music Festival: The temple hosts an annual Hindustani classical music festival. Notable performers include Rajan and Sajan Mishra, and Santoor maestro Shivkumar Sharma.
