Overview
Islamia Hospital – A Legacy of Compassion and Care
Introduction:
Islamia Hospital, situated in the heart of Kolkata, West Bengal, holds a rich legacy that spans nearly a century. Established in 1926, the hospital was initially founded as Islamia Charitable Dispensary by Late Ramjoo, also known as Bhola Mian, with the support of a few generous individuals. What started as a humble dispensary has now grown into a full-fledged hospital known for providing affordable and quality healthcare services to people of all religions, castes, and creeds.
With a mission rooted in serving humanity, Islamia Hospital has continuously evolved over the decades to become a cornerstone of healthcare for the underprivileged. The hospital’s historical importance, along with its commitment to offering modern healthcare facilities, has made it one of the most trusted names in Kolkata.
About Us: History of Islamia Hospital
Islamia Hospital began as a charitable initiative in 1926 at Zakaria Street, Kolkata. Financial difficulties forced the dispensary to be handed over to Memon Jamat, an Islamic charitable organization, and the hospital was shifted to 1, Bolai Dutta Street in 1931, where it was formally named Islamia Hospital.
In 1942, during the second world war, the hospital received a building donation from Late Haji Md. Din Sahib, a kind-hearted businessman from Punjab’s Chiniot. This marked a major turning point, allowing the hospital to establish itself at its current location, 73 Chittaranjan Avenue. The hospital began operations in its newly donated building in January 1943.
Over the years, additional facilities were constructed, thanks to the efforts of several dedicated individuals such as Mulla Jan Mohd. This culminated in the inauguration of a new amalgamated building in 2016, which combined all the previous premises into one, making Islamia Hospital a comprehensive healthcare institution with modern amenities.
Today, Islamia Hospital remains true to its mission of offering affordable healthcare, particularly to the poor and downtrodden, often providing concessions under various schemes, including Swasthya Sathi. The hospital stands as a beacon of hope for people in need, providing care without discrimination.
